Nuff said.

Meanwhile Madeline
I really hope her parents have not killed her. This would greatly hurt many charity efforts that try to raise awareness and promote safety for children.

Farewell, Luciano
Topic: Day to Day

Luciano Pavarottie, my favorite one of the "Three Tenors" dies aged 71, last Thursday.  Death gets mixed review. He is remembered for the entertainment he provided through his music, as well as for the many controvercies that surround him, even in death. Favorite reactions and commentary about his death:

From Associated Press,

  • "He was our Italian flag. He was the best representation that we could have," said Susy Cavallini, a 43-year-old Modena resident as she emerged Saturday from the cathedral. "Modena is known for its cappelletti (a type of tortellini), balsamic vinegar, Ferrari and Pavarotti. It's a collection of important things that Modena has given to the world."
  • "That Pavarotti — a divorced man who had a child out of wedlockwas given public viewing and a funeral in the cathedral spurred some debate here. A Modena parish priest, the Rev. Giorgio Bellei, told Corriere della Sera that the move amounted to "profanation of the temple." Other critics noted that last year the church refused to grant a religious funeral to a paralyzed man who had a doctor disconnect his respirator."

From BBC News

  • "Pavarotti was married to his first wife Adua, with whom he had three daughters, for 35 years until they split in 1996.

He then got together with his secretary Nicoletta Mantovani, who was 26 years old at the time. In 2003, they had been due to have twins, but only one survived, a daughter called Alice.

The couple married in a lavish, star-studded ceremony later that year. "

Mixed bag. My grandfather also died from prostate cancer.

catch-up
Topic: unfinished

so, in the last 4 months, I've been on a plane roughly 10 times, resumed my marathon training, such as it is, and am back at 1/2 marathon lengths, dogs are doing great - Mars has been on a special program to get his hair fixed, and Venus is finally getting her fear generalization behavior under control. A is back in Chicago (yay).

Tomorrow I am going to try to validate my idea for a possible missed cure for ITP.

Working 100 hour weeks besides that, and when possible, learning Katagana.

Topic: readings

Today, I read a very interesting article about a mechanical computer on BBC, which led me to learning about the Antikythera mechanism on Wikipedia, which took me to this cool article about ancient machines and site.

All of this made for some very interesting reading.

Harry Potter and the Good Sons
Topic: readings

A friend of mine is putting together a book club.  I have to read this book, Good Sons, looks like a detective story from the other titles by this author. Hmmm.

Meanwhile, of course, of course, I'm done with HP7. Why that couldn't have been our book club book, I don't know. No more on that, don't want to spoil it for anyone.

I've read and loved most of his books. I was lucky enough to see him do a reading at U of C. Bummer;
