catch-up
Topic: unfinished

so, in the last 4 months, I've been on a plane roughly 10 times, resumed my marathon training, such as it is, and am back at 1/2 marathon lengths, dogs are doing great - Mars has been on a special program to get his hair fixed, and Venus is finally getting her fear generalization behavior under control. A is back in Chicago (yay).

Tomorrow I am going to try to validate my idea for a possible missed cure for ITP.

Working 100 hour weeks besides that, and when possible, learning Katagana.

Antikythera mechanism
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: readings

Today, I read a very interesting article about a mechanical computer on BBC, which led me to learning about the Antikythera mechanism on Wikipedia, which took me to this cool article about ancient machines and site.

All of this made for some very interesting reading.

Harry Potter and the Good Sons
Topic: readings

A friend of mine is putting together a book club.  I have to read this book, Good Sons, looks like a detective story from the other titles by this author. Hmmm.

Meanwhile, of course, of course, I'm done with HP7. Why that couldn't have been our book club book, I don't know. No more on that, don't want to spoil it for anyone.

Kurt Vonnegut died.

I've read and loved most of his books. I was lucky enough to see him do a reading at U of C. Bummer;

news of the day
Mood:  incredulous

1. google launched a free 411 service. (rave)

2. A 45 year-old man and his 16 year-old daughter die amid panic when their cruize boat crashed into a reef, just .25 miles from shore. 400 meters. The crash should probably not have happened - the reef was clearly marked and well known. But even sadder is what happened after the crash.

1600 people panicked, when they are a mere 8-16 minute swim from shore. People said there were not enough life vests and boats. Even if there weren't enough boats to take all of them, a motor boat could probably make a few round trips at that distance, and again, where was shore support? Even a few row boats (and maybe, there was!)? Most of those people should have relaxed a little. Unless it was really rough at sea, that doesn't sound like it would have been that bad. But really, no one should have died for many reasons.

The interesting thing about all this? Is that I guess that a massive volcanic eruption that happened 3,500 years ago killed two people...  This story is just awful. (rant)

in 8 hours, 12 minutes, I'll be sitting in a dark, wet cold place somewhere south of Chicago under water.

 3 days of intense reading

3 long days of lessons

followed by two long days at the bottom of the quarry. Scuba certification, here I come.

Australia, you better be worth it!

Thanks to www.chicagobluedolphins.com for teaching me how to swim in the first place! Fitz, couldn't have gotten this far without you.
